First Holy Communion Instruction: Week Two
The Last Supper
Read together: Matthew 26: 1-30, Mark 14:1-26, Luke 22:1-39, 1 Corinthians 11:17- 34
Discussion:
1. Do the differences is the stories of the Last Supper bother you? Why or why not?  Remember that all were finally written down years after the events and the every author is trying to emphasize something different.
2. Imagine being at the the very first celebration of communion with Jesus. Tell each other what you think it was like and how you would have felt.
Family Discussion Time
Talk about the events of Holy Week together and make certain that everyone in the family knows what happened on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.  Of course be sure that everyone (especially younger members of the family who may be joining you in learning about Holy Communion) remembers what happened on the first Easter Sunday.
1. Which service during Holy Week is the most meaningful to you? Why?
2. Why do you believe Jesus chose the Passover meal to be the first celebration of Communion?

Read "The Sacrament of the Altar" in Luther's Small Catechism. Discussion any portions that the student does not understand as you read together.
Family Discussion
Talk about what types of bread you eat daily.  Remember that bread is all the grain products that we eat. 
What breads does your family prefer?  Why?  Try a new type of bread.
In John's gospel, Jesus proclaims, "I am the bread of life."  How is bread essential for your life?  What does it mean to you that Jesus is the bread of life?
